Do College Students Face Increased Pressure?

With unemployment rates hitting a five year high of 6.1% this last quarter, and with employers shipping more jobs overseas, one must wonder what kind of effect this has on the up and coming workforce.

I would submit that college students in most fields of study are facing increasing pressure to get outstanding grades and receive extra-curricular awards due to the lagging job market. Occupations in finance, and other business related fields will be subject to increased competition due to the recent economic mess in the United Sates and Europe. However, careers in Network Communications, Science, Medicine, and Engineering are projected to keep growing quickly.

If you are a college student who is facing pressure due to a tougher job market, check out the following tips.

1) Network, Network, Network! Networking is invaluable when trying to get a job. The best way to seal up an interview and get hired is to know the people that are going to hire you. Attend career fairs and talk to the recruiters. Use any connections you may have to people already inside the company. Talk to professors as they usually know many people, and can contact them easily. Networking is invaluable when trying to get a job. You can also do some Networking with top Executives online at LinkedIn.com .

2) Know the Job Market. Find out which geographic locations are hiring. Visit the job sites and know who is hiring. When going into the interview, make sure you have done your research on the company as well. Recruiters may ask you questions regarding the success or history of the company, and no one wants to look like an idiot in a job interview.

3) Participate in extracurricular clubs and activities that pertain to your field of study. If possible participate in the leadership of these groups. This practical experience can sometimes give you the edge over the competition.

As the economy turns around, the job market will follow. Until that happens, college students will continue to face pressure to achieve.
