Get It Now.
Music, movies, books, magazines, stock quotes, phone calls, and emails. Each one of these is accessible in less than one second with the press of a button, and as scientists and engineers continue to learn how to jam more memory space into single atoms things will only continue to speed up. When I was first able to use the internet, the only available form of access was dial-up. Having not known any better, I considered my connect quite fast. Instead of taking a ten minute trip to the library, I could know all there was to know about my math homework in 2 minutes. As the years progressed, so did technology, and DSL became the not thing. Once again, having only known dial-up I thought DSL was the speediest thing known to man. I could look at pictures and videos without having to wait 3 - 5 minutes for them to load all of the way. I could download music or email photos without having to set out a few hours in my schedule to do so. Yes, DSL was great. Moving along at the speed of sound. Without any warning, technology struck again and Cable Internet was the rage. If DSL was moving at the speed of sound, then Cable Internet moved at the speed of light. Once again, I could be more interactive with the medias without worry of getting bored waiting for it to load. With the advent of FiOS (Fiberoptic) internet it is only a matter of time before cable internet bites the dust. Only the Cybergods know what is next after FiOS. Some speculate that it will be "The Grid" (read up on it at wired.com ). However, a concept like the grid is at the very least a couple of years away. I am a college student who uses the internet frequently - which could mean most of the time that I am not in class (it is a wonder that I am still only 160 lbs). You can imagine my excitement when I heard that my university had just upgraded to FiOS. I arrived at school, and things were loading almost instantaneously. A week into school the internet started to "lag". (I placed lag in quotes because it took some YouTube videos 15 seconds to load instead of an instant play). Later that night I got to thinking. I was frustrated over 15 seconds of waiting. How competely ridicolous. 15 seconds is fantastic compared to the 3 - 5 weeks it took in the 1700's for communication to happen between the United States and European nations. I crave instant gratification as much as the next guy, but at what point is enough enough? Is it possible that instant gratification can numb us to other things in life that are supposed to be enjoyed? Is it possible that instant gratifiaction will ultimately cause social breakdowns in the way that we interact with other humans? I have given quite a bit of thought to these questions, and hope that you will as well. While I will keep text messaging, download music, download newspapers, and pay for groceries all with the push of a button, I will also set aside time each day to enjoy nature, to enjoy the company of a human, and to just appreciate life without the constant stream of bytes into my fingers, ears, and eyes. |
